Many people have sought out laser eye surgery in order to reduce their dependence on contact lenses and prescription eye glasses. Yet as effective as Pittsburgh LASIK eye surgery has been in the past, there is a new option our there that allowed for greater vision enhancement, and more customized care. We’re talking about custom LASIK surgery that uses CustomVue&™ surgery. Custom LASIK involves a very precise and exact mapping system that will make for an extremely accurate treatment--more accurate than previously available.

About Custom LASIK

Custom LASIK surgery is essentially just what it sounds like. While LASIK has always been customized, custom LASIK reaches new heights in customization for a refractive surgery procedure. This means even the most minute imperfection and flaw of the cornea can be dealt with through surgery.

How the CustomVue&™ System Works

First we use the WaveScan Wavefront&™ system in order to accurately map a patient’s eye. This will identify all of the imperfections on the cornea that are causing a patient’s vision problems. Next, our LASIK surgeons and ophthalmologists serving Pittsburgh will put that data into a computer. During the surgery, the LASIK laser is entirely compute guided, allowing for the greatest possible accuracy and as few potential human errors as possible. Not only is the level of customization greater, so is the level of safety.

Benefits of Custom LASIK Surgery

There are many benefits to custom LASIK to consider. We already mentioned the reduction of potential human error, which is a big plus for safety. In addition, patients also experience greater quality of vision after surgery. This means a greater chance of getting 20/20 vision or better, and it also means that higher order aberrations can be addressed as well.

What is the different between higher and lower order aberrations?

Lower order aberrations are the common refractive errors that many people face: myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism.

Higher order aberrations are minor imperfections on the cornea that result in various other kinds of diminished vision. Some examples of higher order aberrations include:

  • Haloes
  • Glare
  • Double vision
  • Starbursts
  • Hazy vision
  • Poor night vision

Traditional LASIK could only address lower order aberrations. CustomVue&™ LASIK technology allows us to address both lower order aberrations as well as higher order aberrations.
