Visian ICL™
An implantable collamer lens, also known as a phakic intraocular lens (IOL), can provide a solution to refractive error for those who are not LASIK surgery candidates. Unlike a refractive lens exchange and cataract surgery, where the natural lens is replaced with an implant, a phakic IOL placed at our Pittsburgh area facility, augments the focusing power of the patient's existing lens which is left intact. At InSight℠ LASIK & Refractive Group, our refractive surgeon uses the latest in implantable collamer lens technology, the Visian ICL™. Our Cranberry Township surgery center near Pittsburgh is able to provide the highest level of vision correction for virtually any patient's needs.
The Visian ICL™ is a phakic IOL used at our Pittsburgh-area facility in Cranberry Township to correct moderate to severe myopia. Implantation of the Visian ICL™ is similar to modern cataract surgery. However, the procedure does not involve the removal of the eye's crystalline lens. Instead, the Visian ICL™ functions as an implantable collamer lens and works with the natural lens.
What makes the Visian ICL™ unique is the material used in creating this revolutionary implantable collamer lens. It is made from an organic material called Collamer®, a type of collagen that contains a natural lens-like material that makes it highly biocompatible and allows it to mimic the form and function of the eye's natural lens.
The surgeon places the Visian ICL™ through an incision made in the cornea. Since it is a foldable implantable collamer lens, it does not require as large an incision as other phakic IOLs. The lens unfolds naturally after it is placed in the eye. The corners of the lens will then be placed behind the iris, making it invisible to both the patient and others.
Not everyone is an ideal candidate for LASIK surgery. For those patients who are unable to undergo laser vision correction, the Visian ICL™ offers an effective alternative. We can use this implantable collamer lens at our Pittsburgh-area surgery center in Cranberry Township to reduce refractive error to a degree that is well within the range of modern laser eye surgery.
